NATURAL contemporary REMODEL
NATURAL contemporary REMODEL
These snowbird clients sought to transform their not-always-empty nest into a more open and inviting space, ideal for large family gatherings. Their primary goal was to reconfigure the sectioned-off main level to foster connection and inclusivity. By merging the kitchen and dining room, we created a seamless flow throughout the space, making way for an expansive island that comfortably seats seven.
To enhance functionality, the main faucet is strategically positioned at the island’s end near the range, providing a clear line of sight into the living room. This thoughtful placement ensures that those handling prep work or cleanup remain engaged with family and guests. The column refrigerator and freezer, clad in stained clear alder, create a cohesive visual along the far wall. Flanking these units and the wall ovens are two pass-through cabinet doors, designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding cabinetry. These discreet doors conceal a reconfigured laundry/mudroom and a small pantry, which were previously combined into a single, less efficient space.
The client envisioned a design that was natural and contemporary, with a touch of glamour. Clean lines allow the richness of the materials - stained clear alder cabinetry and striking quartzite - to take center stage. The island and range hood are elegantly wrapped in Zermat quartzite from MSI, while Schaub's Vinci cabinet hardware, featuring polished, unlacquered white bronze with organic, imperfect lines, adds a subtle yet sophisticated sparkle. A full-height backsplash of three-dimensional white tile introduces texture and visual intrigue.
With an appreciation for curated displays, the homeowners wanted designated areas for showcasing their dishware and glassware. Near the range hood, slim aluminum-framed cabinets with clear glass inserts highlight a treasured collection of Red Wing pottery. On the opposite end of the space, the wet bar features a mirrored backsplash and glass shelves, offering a refined showcase for glassware. White shaker bifold doors with metal wire mesh inserts allow for discretion when desired. The wet bar is fully equipped with a beverage refrigerator, dishwasher drawers, a pellet ice maker, and a custom locking liquor drawer, ensuring both convenience and security.
Additional design highlights include newly installed cerused oak flooring, a bespoke marble vanity in the powder room, refinished bookshelves with coordinating floating shelves, and a striking natural fireplace surround. Every element, from the cabinet door profiles to the selection of natural quartzite countertops, was meticulously chosen to reflect the homeowners’ unique aesthetic. The result is a space that seamlessly blends beauty and functionality—an entertainer’s dream and a cozy retreat all in one.
