NATURAL contemporary REMODEL

These snowbird clients came to us looking to revamp their not-always-empty nest. They wanted to open up their sectioned off main level, allowing everyone to feel included during large family gatherings. The dining room and kitchen were combined to create connection throughout the main level and make room for an extra long island that seats a cozy seven. The main faucet is located on the end of the island near the range to provide a line of sight into the living room that no one in the kitchen doing prep work or clean up feels left out. The column refrigerator and freezer are paneled with stained clear alder to create visual continuity on the far wall. Flanking the refrigerator columns and wall ovens on the far wall are two pass-through cabinet doors that blend seamlessly into the rest of the kitchen. These doors conceal a laundry/mudroom and a small pantry that used to be one mudroom/laundry room with a small coat closet.

Natural and contemporary "with a touch of glam" was how this client described her aesthetic. Clean lines allow the natural materials - stained clear alder cabinetry, dramatic quartzite - to take center stage.  The island and range hood are wrapped with Zermat quartzite from MSI. Schaub's simple Vinci cabinet hardware, full of perfectly imperfect lines in polished, unlacquered white bronze, adds some sparkle while honoring the natural aesthetic. A full height backsplash with white, 3-dimensional tile adds another layer of texture and interest.

With dishes and glassware to display, this kitchen features two separate cabinet display areas. The first is located near the range hood and employs skinny aluminum framed cabinet doors with clear glass inserts to display a collection of Red Wing pottery. The wet bar on the opposite end of the room boasts a stunning display of glassware emphasized by a mirrored backsplash and glass shelves. White shaker bifold doors with metal wire mesh inserts conceal this area when not in use. The wet bar also features a beverage fridge, dishwasher drawers, a pellet ice maker, and a custom, locking liquor drawer.

Other delightful features include new cerused oak flooring, a bespoke quartzite powder room vanity, refinished bookshelves with matching floating shelves, and an eye-catching natural fireplace surround. Every design decision, from the cabinet door styles to the selection of natural quartzite countertops, was made with the homeowners' unique tastes in mind, resulting in a space that is not just functional, but a true reflection of their personalities. The heart of this home is now a source of joy and delight, a dream space for entertainers and homebodies alike.
