Mid-Century Modern Design Defined

  • April 1, 2019

Mid-Century Modern design is an iconic twentieth-century style that continues to captivate and excite us well into the twenty-first century.

With its sleek lines and warm tones, this style is perfect for those looking for a space that’s welcoming in nature and fun in design! What’s also special about this design style is that it’s not “one-size-fits-all.” Depending on your unique style, you can create a Mid Century Modern space that is anything you desire it to be: colorful or neutral, relaxing or energetic!

On today’s blog we are going to showcase a beautiful mid-century modern remodel by one of our designers as we illustrate and define some of the technical features that make up this unique design.

What is Mid-Century Modern Design?

Mid-Century Modern is a style of architecture, and interior design that reflects World War II optimism, the growing economy, and the rapid rise of suburban living. This period roughly lasted from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s. Suburban homes built during this time were fairly small, yet open, uncluttered, and airy. Efficiency was key. These homes were intentionally designed to be a fresh alternative to the darker, neo-classical styles of the earlier part of the twentieth century.

“Mid-Mod” is so appealing because it tends to blend organic and natural elements with clean and simple styling. Mid-mod design offers a sense of tranquility because of its horizontal tendencies and warm palettes. Less can be more in this design style.

What design features define a Mid-Century Modern space?

  • Organic and geometric shapes. Mid-century modern style focuses on clean lines with a mix of both organic and geometric shapes
  • Function over form
  • Combination of contrasting materials and textures
  • Neutral and bold
  • Bringing nature indoors – warm woods
  • Cabinetry with clean, simple lines

Our designer’s primary design focus for this kitchen remodel was functionality. What was originally thought to be a pretty limited space turned out to be very functional and aesthetically pleasing. The work triangle was re-oriented to make the space more efficient for everyday tasks.

How do you accessorize a mid-century modern inspired space?

Accessories always serve to complete a space. Our designers like to incorporate some of a client’s personal and meaningful items: those that have stories, or simply things that the client really loves. This may include vintage pieces tastefully mixed with newer items to create a pleasing and harmonious blend that honor’s family traditions, while giving the overall space a more modern feel.

Hello. This is a stunning house. I love how well the wall color in the dining room complements their mid-century furniture. Could you provide me with the paint info (brand/color). Thank you.

Studio M Kitchen & Bath says

Hi Tanya, I’m sorry to share that we don’t have that information as we only provided the cabinetry for this home.

Thank you for checking out our blog.
