Kitchen Remodel Reveal: Wonderfully Walnut

We’re wrapping up 2019 with another kitchen remodel reveal! Our kitchen and bath designer worked with her clients to transform their kitchen with a new design and higher quality cabinetry. This kitchen is appropriatly named “Wonderfully Walnut!”

Before

The clients built their home back in 2004, and the quality of the cabinetry their builder provided wasn’t what they expected. We are so glad they found us to give them beautiful new cabinetry, improved functionality, and an enjoyable design experience.

After

Thanks to our wonderful photographer Scott Amundson for these beautiful photos of the completed project!

Kitchen Remodel Walnut Kitchen Island

The basis and starting point for this kitchen design was updated cabinetry. Secondly, the clients wanted the kitchen to fit with the style of the rest of their home. They also loved the color and grain of walnut cabinetry and wanted to integrate it into their new design. To match the existing door and window casing, Decor Cabinet Company created a custom paint color match for the clients’ painted cabinets.

To kick off the design process, the designer asked very detailed questions about how they use their kitchen. The clients felt that their current kitchen didn’t make the best use of the available space, and the designer took this into careful consideration in the new design. Armed with this information, a completely new layout was not necessary; rather, by customizing cabinet sizes, heights and accessories, and moving only the refrigerator the clients’ storage needs were satisfied.

A few other notable design details:

  • The island size increased for more cooking and countertop space
  • The fridge was moved to the sink wall to allow for a more efficient work flow. This is important for a functional kitchen design!
  • A pantry was a must – you see it in the large, walnut storage cabinets with pocket doors. We are seeing these pocket door storage cabinets a lot lately! The designer created a coffee station space on one side and used the other side for utility storage, the microwave and other small appliances. There are also roll-out drawers in the lower cabinets for dry goods and food storage
  • The homeowners loved their new brass hardware finishes which paired perfectly with the creamy paint color and warm walnut

The clients rave about their high quality cabinets and improved kitchen design. (And we really loved their passion for functional cabinetry!) Our designer’s expertise in listening to the clients’ wants and needs resulted in a beautiful, warm and most importantly, functional kitchen for a wonderful family.

Matt Shankweiler says

While the walnut in the remodel is nice the white is overbearing. We’ve seen this movie before in the 90’s with the short lived “white kitchen” trend. Personally I find it cold and sterile. I want my kitchen and house to be warm and inviting… not an effective hospital. I found the before pics showed a space that was warm and comfortable, but I guess whatever people are into. If I were to use white I would use it sparingly to give some “pop” but beyond that it becomes too much.

The Mingle Team says

Hi Matt,
We definitely see where you are coming from. White kitchens are timeless and classic but not for everyone, we have learned over our years of experience! Thank you for your input. We hope you have a great day!

Andrea Braga says

Do you know what stain you used on the floors?

Studio M Kitchen & Bath says

Hi Andrea,

Because we specialize in cabinetry, we don’t always provide all of the products to complete a remodel such as flooring, lighting, tile, etc. We sometimes do, our interior design team sometimes is part of the project to make those selections, or the client provides it themselves.

For this project, here is the information I have for you regarding the flooring: It is Existing Red Birch flooring and it was refinished with a custom stain. We unfortunately don’t have the custom stain information.

Thank you & have a wonderful day,
MacKenzie @ Studio M Kitchen & Bath

Molly McGregor says

I love the mosaic in the backsplash! Such a beautiful and special touch. Are you able to share the source for the tile?

Studio M Kitchen & Bath says

Hi Molly,

Thank you for the kind words! We would be happy to provide that information for you.
Here is what I have for information on the accent tile: Lycian Rhomboid polished blend – Apollo

Let us know if we can be of any further assistance and it is our pleasure. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Absolutely beautiful!! I am considering custom walnut cabinets and want them to turn out just like those. I read they have no additional stain. Is that correct? I am considering matte sealer. What did you use?

Studio M Kitchen & Bath says

Hi Lisa,

You are correct! This is a natural walnut from one of our cabinet partners, Decor Cabinet Company.

Thank you for checking out our blog! Have a nice day and let us know if we may be of any further assistance.
