rustic country home
This Rustic Country Home was inspired by traditional equestrian style. Every space -- from the kitchen and family room to the laundry room renovation -- connotes ranch life.
This traditional horse ranch, located in rural Minnesota, desperately needed a remodel. These homeowners love to cook and entertain, but the existing kitchen and entire main floor limited their capability to do either. The outdated, dark, closed-in kitchen was opened to the main living area. To create an ideal space for entertaining, a wall that separated the living room and kitchen was removed, converting the space into a more functional, open floor plan. A doorway shifted to create space for more cabinetry, countertop space, and a new range. The inadequate pendant lighting was replaced with new recessed lighting, significantly brightening up the entire space. The new kitchen design now allows them to easily prepare gourmet meals in an inviting space where their friends and family can comfortably gather.
This remodel uses Dura Supreme cabinetry throughout several rooms. The kitchen features a traditional Chapel Hill inset cabinet door style with a custom beaded frame, decorative barrel hinges, and optional slab drawer fronts. Perimeter cabinetry is finished in the Heritage “K” painted finish, and the kitchen island is painted Black with distressing and a rub-through finish. The living room and bar area showcase the Chapel Hill full overlay door style in the Heirloom “O” finish on Knotty Alder. The laundry room features a custom door style in a Putty painted finish. Add in traditional crown molding and cup pulls, and you get the epitome of traditional style.
The kitchen design includes ample storage and counter space, commercial grade, panel ready appliances for high-volume cooking, and a large kitchen island for meal prep and entertaining. Reclaimed wood used as ceiling beams, flooring, and the kitchen island countertop embodies rustic charm. A dramatic custom copper hood with a soft, hammered finish along with an artisanal tile backsplash and galloping horse mosaic create a beautiful, country-inspired focal point, embracing the horse ranch theme. To accommodate a large collection of exotic spices and cooking oils, two handy pull-out spice racks, hidden behind grand, decorative turned posts were incorporated.
The new bar area provides even more storage near the kitchen and dining room. Two refrigerator drawers and an under-the-counter beverage fridge were added to create the perfect space for entertaining guests. An exposed brick wall and shiplap ceiling detail in the hallway surrounding the new furniture-style dry bar add to the rustic atmosphere. Sliding barn doors and black, wrought iron-inspired light fixtures complete the look.
In the living area, a natural stone wall surrounding the new fireplace adds rustic texture to the room. A built-in, Knotty Alder entertainment center conceals the TV with pocket doors and stores the homeowners’ entire media collection, DVD player, and gaming consoles.
With well thought-out space planning and meticulous attention to every detail, this remodel focuses on the value of family, tradition, and craftsmanship, while also capturing the rustic equestrian style the homeowners were hoping for.
