Cabinetry is an essential component of a home’s interior, and designers today are drawing inspiration from a variety of sources. In 2022 cabinetry designs will pay homage to modernism and American design heroes of the early 20th century like Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles and Ray Eames. Organic colors and shapes will continue to impact design decisions as we look for ways to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the natural world. Calming designs will also take cues from slow living, rustic minimalism. Let’s talk about how these ideas will translate into cabinetry in 2022.
Texture adds richness and dimension like no other design element. As the shiplap trend continues to evolve, we’ll see more textured cabinetry in 2022. Trendier designs will embrace fluted or reeded cabinetry. V-groove cabinetry or ribbed glass inserts make for subtler interpretations.
Right on the heels of texture is line and the emphasis of vertical or horizontal lines that add drama to larger spaces. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and refrigerator appliance panels create a single, clean, vertical lines. Tall cabinets like larders and pantries with rectangular wood hoods also emphasize height and draw the eye up. Long vanities and islands with parallel floating shelves, in contrast, emphasize length.
Shaker cabinets are not going anywhere in 2022, but they’ll shift from stark whites to colors that better honor their traditional, historic heritage. Inset construction will keep them looking fresh and modern. Exposed hinges, latches, dainty knobs, and cup pulls add rustic, minimal touches.
Slab cabinet doors are not just for sleek, contemporary designs. In whimsical colors and with fun, retro hardware they become quaint and nostalgic – especially in a smaller space like kitchenettes.
Decorative bun feet, unique seating and storage, and wheels make vanities and kitchen islands look like antiques while putting in all the hard work required of them. Islands with table legs provide space for cooking as well as entertaining. Furniture style vanities make a unique statement in powder rooms.
